Linear Inequalities

Graphing Inequalities in Two Variables

The graph of a linear inequality is not a function since it fails the vertical line test.

BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE:

The graph at right is the function y = 2x – 3

The function divides the coordinate plane into three sets.

bulletpoints on the line
bulletpoints above the line
bulletpoints below the line

These regions above and below the line are called half-planes. The line is called a boundary line.

Ex. #1:

Graph:

Boundary line is included in the solution set as indicated by the solid line on the graph.

All points located above the line are solutions to the inequality.

Test Point: (0, 0)

Test (0,0) is False, shade half-plane above the boundary line.

Ex. #2:

Graph:

Boundary line is not included in the solution set as indicated by the dotted line on the graph.

All points located below the boundary are solutions to the inequality.

Test (0, 0)

Test (0,0) is False, shade half-plane below the boundary line.

Ex. #3:

Graph:

Boundary line is included in the solution set as indicated by the solid line on the graph.

All points located above the boundary are solutions to the inequality.

Test (0, 0)

Test (0,0) is True, shade half-plane above the boundary line.
